As a Tutor
My name is Sara Jackson. I've been working avocationally as a paid and/or volunteer tutor with diverse student populations from ages six to twenty-six since I was in high school myself. I have tutored 1:1, in small groups, and in workshops. My work has helped students with all types of academic writing, technical writing, creative writing, professional writing, advanced research skills, standardized test preparation, application essays (admissions, scholarships, professional fellowships, etc.), and foreign language comprehension.
As an educator, my philosophy is simple: everyone can learn! Learning should be rooted in the curiosity of the learner, it should be somewhat unpredictable (in that you never know where a research question might lead!), and it should be FUN. I meet students where they are today and together we discuss where they want to go and develop together a plan to get them there.
As a Teacher
I'm a licensed Professional Educator (expiry August 2030) in the state of Indiana, with endorsements for Social Studies in grades 5 through 9. I've also taught English at the middle school level for several years, including as an Assistant de Langue for a one-year contract at two collèges (middle schools) in Normandy, France.
I've also served as a test proctor at the undergraduate level as well as for the SSAT, so I know how to accurately replicate test circumstances to reduce or eliminate anxiety about test day.
As a Student
Although I'm now . . . mostly reformed, haha, I can admit that I paid WAY too much attention to things like grades and my GPA when I was in school. While I don't believe that these things are any more important, AT ALL, than actually learning, I do feel proud of the quality of my work. That's why I've included that information above, besides recognizing that people often want to know how successful tutors have been on their own learning journeys, as it can relate to their ability to provide guidance and support to their tutees.
As a Person
A native of Indiana who spent my childhood in Florida and have since lived in another dozen (or so) locales, I pride myself on having been a bit of a nomad thus far. I happily arrived here in the Boston area in August 2023 after being a life-long Red Sox fan from afar. My passion and longtime avocation has been quality, equitable educational access, which served as my primary social policy concentration throughout my graduate studies. In my off-hours, I re-watch my favorite classic films, travel, hike, take pictures, buy or scavenge old glass insulators, run, read to excess, work through my 150+ cookbook collection, stress bake, continually improve my times on the erg, complete the crossword / Wordle / Spelling Bee, volunteer as Public Affairs Officer with the Hanscom Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol, and listen to Hot Jazz Saturday Night on WAMU. I live with two ungrateful cats, Gloria and Mavis, and a very grateful former school tortoise, Pesto, in Wellesley.
